Wentong Fm

Period:
Neoproterozoic

Age Interval:
mid-Early Qingbaikouan (early Tonian), Qb (57)

Province:
Guangxi

Type Locality and Naming

Northern Guangxi. The Wentong Fm was named by the Party of Regional Geological Survey, Guanxi Bureau of Geology in 1973. The naming section is situated around Huangfengshan-Wentong near Sanfang, Rongshui County, Guangxi Zhuangzhu Zizhiqu (Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region). The formation is the middle stratigraphic unit of the Sipu Gr.

Synonym: (文通组)

Lithology and Thickness

The Wentong Fm is subdivided into lower, middle and upper parts. Lower part is composed of grey, grey-green and dark-grey meta-sandstone, siltstone and slate, locally sandwiched with intermediate-basic volcaniclastic rock (volcanic breccia, tuff, tuffite, agglomerate and spilite). Middle part consists of spilite and keratophyre, welded tuff, volcanic breccia, intercalated with meta-sandstone and slate. Upper part is spilite with keratophyre, and the top is tuff with brecciated tuff. The formation is 600 - 1200 m thick.

Lithology Pattern:
Volcanics

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It is in conformable contact with underlying Jiuxiao Fm.

Upper contact

It is conformably overlain by the Yuxi Fm.

Regional extent

Northern Guangxi. It is developed in Rongshui County, Guangxi.
